Process Questions

Process Questions are meant to be a tool to promote thinking in our children.

Questions that FOCUS ATTENTION
-Have you seen...?
-Do you notice....?
-What is it...?
-What's that?
-Look at this
-Come and see
-How can you find out?

Questions that FORCE COMPARISON
-How many...?
-How long...?
-How often....?
-How much....?
-When have you done something like this before?
-How is _____________ different/like _____________?

Questions that SEEK CLARIFICATION
-What do you mean by...?
-Can you explain further
-Tell us more
-Can you give us an example
-Can you show me?
-Can you put it another way?
-What else did they do?
-Can you be more specific?
-What do you think the problem is?

Questions that INVITE FURTHER INQUIRY
-What do you need to know?
-How can we find out?
-Can you find a way to...?
-What would happen if...?
-What do you think?
-What happened last time?
-How did you feel when?
-What are you assuming?
-What do we need to do next?
-When is another time you need to...?

Questions that SEEK REASON OR EXPLANATION
-Yes, that's right, but how do you know that's right?
-How did you know that?
-Why did you say that?
-What are your reasons?
-Tell me how you did that?
-What is your evidence?
***Why do you think that? (the answer to this question is always right-even if there is a flaw in the child's thinking-the child knows what s/he thinks and to find this out we need to ask the child.
