The ONE thing you must do when it comes to teaching reading

When it comes to producing a reader in your home, there is one thing that you can do--above all others--in order to produce a reader.

READ to them.

Your children will become readers simply by sitting with you as you read. Snuggled up next to you or lounging on the couch together, your child has the best opportunity of learning to read.

So go sit down.
The laundry can wait and so can the dishes.
Now is the time to sit down together and read a book together.

As you go, play a game.
You read a page, they read a page.
Or every time you come across the word THE they have to read it.
Or read until you get to a very interesting part, then put the book down. When protests arise, just shrug and say, "Well, you are welcome to read ahead. I have some things to care of first."
Or...
Or...
Or...

There are many ways to build a reader, but first you have to sit down and read with them.
